70년대 후반, 후기 펑크시대에 등장했지만,
펑크음악과 거리가 먼 팝 록(pub rock)에 기초를 두고
심지어 멜랑꼴리한 느낌을 주는 영국 그룹 다이어 스트레이츠(Dire Straits)는
주류에 휩쓸리지 않고 자신들만의 음악을 고수해 온 것으로 잘 알려져 있다.
보컬리스트이자 기타리스트인 마크 노플러(Mark Knopfler)가 이끄는
다이어 스트레이츠는 제이제이 케일(J.J. Cale)의 블루스록에
기반을 둔 사운드를 구사했고, 때때로 재즈와 컨트리 음악,
심지어 프로그레시브 록의 서사적인 흐름도 이어왔다.
