Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

이파리에는 핏자국,뿌리에도 피가 고여
흑인 소년 하나가 남풍에 흔들리네
이상한 열매 하나,포플러나무에 매달렸네

 

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

 

아름다운 남부의 목가적인 풍경
쏟아질 듯 튀어나온 눈알과 비틀린 입
목련꽃 향기 달콤하고 신선한데
어디선가 갑작스런 살 타는 냄새

 

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
for the rain to gather
for the wind to suck
for the sun to rot
for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

 

이것은 까마귀들이 쪼아먹을 열매
빗물이 고이고 바람이 핥아
태양에 살이 문드러지면 나무에서 떨어질 열매
이것은 이상하고 쓰디쓴 열매

 

 

 

이 곡은 인종차별에 대한 아픈 역사를 얘기하고있다.

흑인에 대한 백인들의 멸시와폭력 그리고 죽음...

Strange Fruit란 백인 인종차별 주의자들에게 집단 린치를 당한 뒤

나무에 매달려 있는 흑인소년을 묘사한 것이다
